  • Monster Breed

Do you know what the world really needs? Yet another game where you raise a monster and battle against other monsters in an arena-like environment! If you agree with the statement I just made, then Monster Breed is right up your alley. It contains all the breeding, raising, and mindless destruction of other games in glorious technicolor!

If you detected a note of sarcasm in that paragraph, it's because this is one genre I honestly feel doesn't have the sturdiest of legs, but that's my opinion, and it has no place in a preview. Right? If you are a fan of this type of game, i.e. Monster Rancher, then you will find a lot to like here. Basically, you breed a monster, and train it through various means. When you feel it's ready, you pit it against other monsters in an arena. The graphics in this section of the game are jaw dropping, and this aspect alone recommends it over it's predecessors. For those who need more, read on.

It seems as certain as the sun will rise that the VMS will be used extensively in this game. Players will be able to download their monster to the VMS, train it on the go, and in all probability, allow you to battle other people's monsters via VMS link-up. Naturally, you will also be able to bring your monster over to your friend's house for some high class butt-whupping.

What else can be said? This title should release in Japan sometime in 1999, although a domestic release is questionable at best. If Pokemon keeps riding high, and Monster Rancher 2 does decent business, we may just see this title at or shortly after launch in the US.
