  • Maken X

Maken X will be Atlus's first effort on the Dreamcast. An adventure/action title, this is a title which we may not see over in the U.S. for a wide variety of reasons. The game features nazi symbols and other questionable graphical depictions that would be very controversial over here. There is no doubt, that a U.S. release of this game in it's current form would cause a public outcry.

The story of Maken X is just as controversial as it's graphical depictions. The United States and China are the two biggest super powers in the world. Both of these super powers are at a struggle with each other and on the brink of war. In the mean time, it is learned that something known as the Imaji is unearthed by a group of Japanese researchers. These researchers learn that the Imaji actually combines with the human brain to create a door between the spiritual and human worlds. Knowing that this power would be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands, they seal it inside a sword. Although the scientists were not finished with their research, they are attacked by terrorists who learn of their efforts. After bloodshed, the story begins. In case you don't know already, politics and controversial themes will play a major role in the outcome of the story. Despite this, the storyline appears to very intriguing.

The gameplay in this title will be fairly unique. You will actually have control of the same sword featured in the story. This sword which is called the Devil Sword or Evil Sword will give your character the ability to take over people's minds. In addition you will also have the opportunity to fight people through normal combat techniques. Combine unique gameplay, with an interesting storyline, some nice looking graphics and Atlus has a really good looking title on their hands.

I'm really looking forward to this game, but if it comes out in the U.S., Atlus will probably have to make some changes. Although this is dissapointing, Maken X should be an excellent Dreamcast effort for Japanese gamers. Currently, Maken X is slated for a 1999 release.
